What is the Coronavirus?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in people and many different species of animals. The current outbreak involves a new coronavirus that causes a condition called COVID-19.

How does COVID-19 spread?

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person. This mostly occurs when respiratory droplets from an infected person land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby via a cough or sneeze. 

COVID-19 seems to be spreading easily and sustainably in the community (“community spread”).

What are symptoms of the virus?

The following symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

Or at least two of these symptoms:

  • Fever 
  • Chills
  • Repeated shaking with chills
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle pain
  • New loss of taste or smell

How is COVID-19 treated?

There is no specific antiviral treatment recommended for COVID-19. People who think they may have been exposed should contact a healthcare provider immediately.

Minimize your risk of exposure

The recommended measures will help prevent the spread of infections, such as colds, flu and stomach bugs, and can protect you and your family from getting sick even if COVID-19 is not widespread in your community.

  • Wipe down surfaces with disinfectant regularly to reduce the spread of germs.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unclean hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick and stay home if you are sick.
  • Avoid germ-filled waiting rooms and seek care online or by phone.
  • Avoid crowded places and practice social distancing from others.
  • Wear cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies)
  • Plan to get vaccinated. The combination of getting vaccinated and following the WHO / ICMR’s guidelines to protect yourself and others will offer the best protection from COVID-19.
