Spinal Cord Injury

The common saying is, ‘Prevention is better than cure’. But in fact, where a spinal cord injury is concerned, ‘Prevention is Cure’. It’s a form of paralysis, in which there is a decrease or loss of mobility and sensation below the spinal cord injury level with affected bladder and bowel control.

The extent of symptoms would depend on type and level of injury. Patient would have difficulty in moving arm or leg or both, tingling and numbness in the limbs involved, difficulty in breathing and sexual dysfunction.

Causes :

A) Traumatic

  • Car and motorcycle accidents (38%)
  • Falls (30%)
  • Violence, the most common source of which is gunshot wounds (14%)
  • Sports and recreational activities, with diving accidents leading the way (9%)
  • Medical or surgical injuries (5%)

B) Non Traumatic

  • Genetic disorders, such as hereditary spastic paraplegia and spina bifida
  • Oxygen deprivation to the brain at the time of birth can result in paraplegic type cerebral palsy.
  • Autoimmune disorders like transverse myelitis
  • Tuberculosis infection of the spine
  • Tumors, lesions, or cancer of the brain or spinal cord

Physiotherapy treatment is started, once the patient is medically stable as few patients might have undergone surgery to stabilize their spine. Treatment is planned after a detailed evaluation of the patient based on his level of injury and available capabilities.
